FUEL CELL

                   Fuel cell

Introduction ----------- as we know that chemical energy is converted into electrical energy in a galvanic cell. Fuel cell is also a galvanic electrochemical cell in which oxidation and reduction in the cell takes place at two different electrode surfaces separated from each other and fuel is burnt in the presence of air(combustion).

The exchange of electrons takes place only when the atoms of oxygen come into contact with fuel. Chemical energy of fuel is converted into heat and heat energy is then converted into electrical energy by playing the turbine in generator.
Sir Willium Grove invented the first fuel cell in 1839.

In 1950 NASA (national aeronautics and space agency) made the basis of fuel cell by using them in space vehicles. In apoleo moon flights H2O2 cell was used as the primary source of electrical energy that is most common type of fuel cell.

ADVANTAGES—
1.    High efficiency of energy conversion (70-80%) from chemical energy to electrical energy.
2.   They are eco-friendly as the as the product of the electrode reactions are not toxic and do not cause environment pollution or health hazards.
3.   fuel cells have multifold advantages. In addition to low or zero emissions, benefit includes high efficiency and reliability, multifuel capability, siting flexibility, durability, scalability and case of maintenance
